Easy To Make Raised Waffles

Old-fashioned raised waffles are a delightful breakfast treat that stand out from traditional waffles due to their light, airy texture and crispy, golden-brown crust. They are made using a yeast-based batter, which gives them a distinct flavor and fluffiness that's impossible to achieve with baking powder alone.

The batter, once cooked, forms a crisp, golden-brown shell that contrasts beautifully with the soft, fluffy interior. The crispiness comes from the combination of butter in the batter and the cooking method, which is typically in a preheated, well-oiled waffle iron.

Thanks to the yeast, the waffles have a light, airy texture. The yeast causes the batter to rise slowly, developing small bubbles that give the waffles a spongy, tender crumb. The result is a waffle that’s soft and pillowy on the inside, with a slight chewiness that’s distinct from regular waffles.

Serving: 6-8 waffles

Prep Time: 15 minutes then overnight rising time

Cook Time: 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup warm water

  • 2-1/2 teaspoons dry yeast

  • 2 cups warm whole milk

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large bowl place warm water and yeast, mix, and let sit for 5 minutes until foaming bubbles form.

  2. Once bubbles form, mix in milk, butter, salt, and flour until fully incorporated.

  3. Once no lumps exist then cover and place in a warm/room temperature place overnight or for at least 8 hours.

  4. Heat up the waffle iron on medium to high heat.

  5. When waffle iron is ready mix in eggs, baking soda, and vanilla extract.

  6. Pour anywhere from 1/2 to 1/4 cup of batter into iron depending on size.

  7. Bake until golden brown and crispy.

  8. Once fully cooked, add fruit, syrup, or just some honey and butter then ENJOY!

In summary, old-fashioned raised waffles are not just a breakfast treat—they are an experience. The yeast-based batter gives them an exceptional rise, resulting in waffles that are both light and fluffy inside with a crispy, golden exterior. The process of making them might take a bit longer, but the result is well worth the wait: a waffle that is flavorful, satisfying, and the perfect foundation for your favorite toppings.
